Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, traces its roots back thousands of years to ancient India. It draws from the wisdom of the Vedas, the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism, serving as the foundational framework for this astrological system.

The term “Jyotish”, originating from Sanskrit, translates to the “science of light”, emphasizing its emphasis on celestial bodies’ impact on human lives.

Astrology can be basically divided into static(Kundli) or Dynamic ( Dasha and Gochar ). By static we mean the placement of stars and planets at the time of our birth are put down in a chart. It is the snapshot of the sky the moment you are born.

The chart comprises of all the planets and celestial objects in astrology, present in the zodiac signs that they were occupying.

So how to get your birth chart?

There are many apps and websites which provide you with the birth chart calculator but my favourite and easiest to use is Astrosage.

You simply need to enter your Date of birth, time of birth and your place of birth. Next click on the Birth Chart / Kundli on your page and you will see a chart somewhat like the above image.

Birth chart is a sensitive diagram and requires data accuracy because the chart changes every 4 mins, so any guessing will deliver incorrect result.

What are Dashas ?

The Dynamic part comprises of Transits / Dashas or Gochar. Dasha is a Sanskrit term which indicates planetary periods of time. These indicate whether benefic or malefic effects are present depending upon the placement by Sign( Rashi ), House( Bhava ) and Aspects ( Dhristi ).

Dasha can be considered as the planet in the driving seat of your life or the which will have the most impact. Antardasha is the planet beside the driver’s seat, which can affect the driving to a great extent. Pratyantardasha can be considered as the planet in the back seat which also have an influence to some extent.

Gochar or Transit is the present planetary movement of the planets and how they affect us based on how these planets are placed in our birth chart.

What are the triangles in the birth chart?

You may notice that the whole chart is divided into twelve small triangles, these slices are known as ‘houses’ . P.S. Houses are not the same as zodiac signs, even though both are 12 and the numbers mentioned in the chart above are for rashis and the one below represent houses. For houses the numbers are not mentioned in a birth chart so the numbers that you see in you chart represent that rashi or zodiac.

Different areas of our lives are represented by these houses. As we move from the 1st to the 12th, the houses transition from more individualistic and materialistic to social and intangible .

Let’s see what each house represents:

  • 1st house: Self, Identity, Physical Appearance
  • 2nd house: Money, Material Possesions, Values
  • 3rd house: Communication, Siblings
  • 4th house: Mother, Home, Happiness, Early Education
  • 5th house: Creativity, Romance, Children
  • 6th house: Legal battles, Hidden Enemies, Fights
  • 7th house: Marriages, Partnerships

  • 11th house: Friendship, Social circles, Financial gains, Network, Income, Profit

The Zodiac Signs/ Rashis

Let us take a look at what zodiac signs these planets occupy. The zodiac signs show how these planets carry out their mission. For example, Venus represents love and sensuality when placed in the fiery zodiac sign of Aries , it will be expressed through a passionate and spontaneous love. When placed in the water sign of pisces it will manifest as Imaginative and magical romance.

Lets see what are the 12 Zodiacs:

  • 1 – Aries : Bravery, Passion, Spontaineity
  • 2 – Taurus : Loyalty, Commitment, Practicality
  • 3 – Gemini : Curiosity, Communication, Play
  • 4 – Cancer : Sensitivity, protection, creativity
  • 5 – Leo : Performance, Courage, Pride
  • 6 – Virgo : Organisation, Structure, Pragmatism

How to combine everything?

You need to consider, What role does a planet play? How does it perform its role ? and in which areas of life does it manifest?

For instance, Jupiter in Virgo in 10th house will bring abundance, expansion and luck( Jupiter ) through structure ( Virgo ) over the course of its career ( 10th house ).

My recommendation? Allow yourself plenty of time! Your skill in crafting, compelling astrological interpretations will grow with practice.

I often remind myself and others of the wisdom that the right knowledge presents itself exactly when its needed. This wisdom extends to astrology as well . You’ll grasp its mysteries at the perfect moment – trust in the divine timing and embrace the journey.
